Multilateral Measurement of Four Fundamental Communication Skills

The GTEC administers questions and tasks to assess language skills in the following order:
Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It assesses each skill according to various linguistic
aspects that are addressed in three to four sections called "parts". These are listed below:

Dialogue

Evaluation of skills needed to quickly comprehend and respond to questions when information is not provided in advance
Comprehension

Evaluation of skills needed to judge and select targeted information needed from a relatively long passage, in order to correctly answer questions provided in advance

Listening skills are measured from various angles, including response speed, information selection and fundamental understanding
Reading
Vocabulary and Wording

Evaluation of skills needed to understand the context of sentences and select the most grammatically appropriate word(s) for sentence blanks
Reading and Comprehension

Evaluation of skills needed to understand the content and important points related to the context of a relatively short English passage (150 words)
Passage Comprehension

Evaluation of skills needed to understand important points and to scan for necessary information related to the context of a relatively long passage (350 words)

Reading comprehension skills are measured from various angles, focusing on lower level reading ability
Writing
Short texts/ Memo Writing

Evaluation of skills needed to write a simple memo using appropriate words and expressions within the context provided
Medium Texts/ E-mail Writing
Evaluation of skills needed to compose a written a passage, such as an e-mail message, and effectively communicate simple information
Report
Writing
Evaluation of explanatory skills, opinion stating, and structural skills involved in business-related themes through the use of diagrams and photographs

Writing skills are measured in the context of a real life task directly linked to business or daily life
Speaking
Pronunciation, Rhythm and Intonation
Evaluation of basic speaking skills, including pronunciation and intonation, through the reading of specified passages aloud
Dialogue Simulation
Evaluation of skills such as breadth of vocabulary, expressions, correct grammar usage and communication strategies necessary for effective dialogue through the use of video simulation
Story
Telling
Recording of a 1-minute explanation of a 9-frame comic strip, with execution of a comprehensive oral evaluation, demonstrating logical thought and proper grammatical structure
Short Presentation
Comprehensive evaluation of oral explanatory skills and English grammatical structure on a business-related subject, using diagrams and photographs as aids
Speaking skills are measured from aspects including pronunciation and the effective use of English in a realistic situation
