Online Test for Measurement of Practical English Proficiency
The GTEC is a new type of online test that has been developed through a partnership between
Benesse Corporation and Berlitz International. It is designed to accurately measure genuine
English proficiency for today's business environment. The GTEC is unique in that it comprises a
series of online English proficiency tests measuring all four language skills (speaking, listening,
reading, writing) or combinations of two skills.
The test questions, all of which were developed in the United States and the United Kingdom,
were built using authentic English that is actually used in business as well as in everyday life.
They are, therefore, the most suitable for testing practical English proficiency. During the product
development process, question content and difficulty levels were thoroughly examined through
global field-testing.
As an adaptive test, the GTEC incorporates "Item Response Theory," which has been widely
adopted in major language certification tests and uses methodology available only in an online
environment. This also contributes to a more efficient and effective measurement of English
communication ability. The GTEC assesses listening and reading skills in this manner.
As with listening and reading skills, the GTEC administers the components for speaking and
writing online. These skills, however, are assessed by raters once a test is complete. As a result,
the GTEC incorporates both computerized and human scoring in an online environment.
Furthermore, the test items for speaking and writing skills are task-based, prompting examinees
to use their skills in realistic situations for greater test validation.
